We’re NPTC-qualified, fully insured, and have been clearing stumps across this part of East Sussex for over seven years. If you’ve got a stump that needs dealing with, this page covers what’s involved and what makes Mayfield a bit different from other areas we work in.

What to Know

Tree stump removal in Mayfield comes with some considerations that are worth understanding before you get in touch. Mayfield is a historic High Weald village with a significant amount of established, mature planting, older gardens, hedgerow trees that have been in place for decades, and wooded ground on the edges of many properties. That character affects both the species we tend to deal with and how we approach access. We cover Mayfield itself and the surrounding area including Five Ashes, Rotherfield, Wadhurst, and the rural ground between them.

About Troy’s Tree and Hedge Services

Troy Mallyon founded Troy’s Tree and Hedge Services over seven years ago. He holds NPTC qualifications from Plumpton College and carries full public liability insurance on every job. The business works across East Sussex and into Kent, and Mayfield and the High Weald villages are a regular part of that working area. Straightforward pricing, proper workmanship, and consistent five-star reviews from customers across the region.

The Ground Around Mayfield and How It Affects Stumps

Mayfield sits on a sandstone ridge in the High Weald, elevated ground that has a different character to the low-lying Wealden clay you find in towns like Hailsham and Uckfield further south. The High Weald geology here is a mix of sandstone and clay bands, and the balance between them varies from one garden to the next.

On the sandstone-dominant ground around the ridge, soil tends to drain more freely. In more free-draining conditions, tree roots can spread further and deeper than the visible stump suggests, because they face less resistance as they grow. A stump that looks modest at ground level may have a more extensive root plate underneath, which is part of why a proper assessment is needed before a price can be given.

Where clay is closer to the surface, the ground holds moisture more readily, and stumps left in place after a tree comes down are more vulnerable to decay. A decaying stump is a source of honey fungus. Honey fungus travels through the soil and can take hold in nearby healthy trees, hedgerows, and established shrubs. In a garden with mature planting you want to protect, removing the stump sooner is the right decision.

What Happens Once We Start

The stump is ground down in passes, the machine works across it repeatedly, breaking the stump and the surrounding surface roots into wood chippings. The grinding takes the stump to around 20 to 30 centimetres below ground level. Once that’s done, the chippings can be packed back into the hole and levelled off, used as mulch on the garden, or removed from site entirely. There’s no waiting around afterwards, the ground is usable straight away for turfing, planting, paving, or building on.

Trees We Deal With Around Mayfield

The High Weald has a distinct tree character, and the species we see most often around Mayfield reflect that.

Sweet chestnut is common throughout this part of East Sussex. It has been managed in the High Weald for centuries, for coppice, fencing, and timber, and it appears in both managed woodland and older residential gardens. Sweet chestnut is a hardwood with a well-developed lateral root system, and stumps take longer to grind than softer species. If you’ve got a sweet chestnut stump in a Mayfield garden, expect it to take longer than a softwood job of the same visible size.

Oak is widespread in the older gardens and on the edges of properties that back onto wooded ground, which is common around Mayfield. Oak stumps are dense and firmly anchored, they’re among the more time-consuming jobs we carry out regardless of location.

Ash dieback has brought down a considerable number of trees across the High Weald in recent years. In and around Mayfield this has left stumps on residential and rural properties that need removing, and ash is one of the species we come across regularly throughout the area.

Tree Preservation Orders and Wealden District Council

Mayfield falls under Wealden District Council for planning purposes. The High Weald AONB designation and the historic character of the village mean that tree coverage here is taken seriously, and established trees in this area are more likely to carry Tree Preservation Orders than trees in more urban or non-designated locations.

If the tree that has been felled or removed was subject to a TPO, there may be a requirement to notify Wealden District Council before stump removal can go ahead. This doesn’t apply to every job, it depends on the status of the individual tree. We check TPO status and advise you clearly on what’s required before any work starts. If you already know the tree was protected, mention it when you get in touch.

Access Around Mayfield

Access is one of the things we look at carefully when working in and around Mayfield. The village sits on a ridge and the approach roads and lanes in this part of the High Weald reflect that, narrow, sometimes steep, and occasionally with passing places rather than proper lane widths.

Within the village itself, many properties have reasonable rear access, though older buildings on the main street and close to the historic centre can have limited side access. The more rural properties around Mayfield, along the lanes towards Five Ashes and out into the surrounding countryside, vary considerably. Some have wide open access to the working area, others involve navigating farm tracks, uneven ground, or established planting that needs working around carefully.

We assess all of this as part of the job. The laski stump grinder is built to fit through a standard domestic gate, and we’ve worked on enough rural High Weald properties to know what to plan for. If there’s a genuine access issue, we’ll be clear about it before any work is scheduled.

Coordinating with Other Work

Tree stump removal in Mayfield often forms part of a broader garden project, clearing ground for a new fence line, preparing for landscaping, or tidying a rural plot that has been left unmanaged for some time. If other contractors are involved and the stump needs to be gone before they can start, let us know the schedule and we’ll work to fit in with it. If the tree is also being felled, we can combine both into a single visit and leave the site fully clear in one go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the type of tree affect how long the job takes and what it costs?

Yes. Hardwoods like sweet chestnut and oak, both common around Mayfield, take longer to grind than softer species. The size of the stump and the ease of access are the main pricing factors, but species is part of it. We take all of it into account.

Will the ground be safe and usable straight after?

Yes. The stump and main surface roots are ground down to around 20 to 30 centimetres below ground level. Smaller feeder roots remain underground but break down naturally without causing problems. The ground is stable and usable immediately, you don’t need to wait before turfing, paving, or planting.

What if the tree had a Tree Preservation Order?

It may mean notifying Wealden District Council before the stump is removed. We check this and advise you on exactly what applies before any work is booked. If you know the tree was protected, say so when you get in touch.

Can you remove stumps that have been in the ground for a long time?

Yes. Older stumps are not a problem and in some cases are easier to grind once the wood has begun to soften. The reason to remove them sooner rather than later is the increasing risk of honey fungus, which grows over time in decaying stumps and can spread to other planting in the garden.

What happens to the chippings after grinding?

The chippings can be packed back into the hole and levelled off, left on site as mulch, or removed. We’ll ask what you’d prefer on the day.

How soon can you get to us?

It varies with the time of year. For a standard job we can usually get to it within a couple of weeks of enquiry. If you have a project deadline, let us know and we’ll work to accommodate it where we can.

Do you cover the villages around Mayfield?

Yes. We regularly work in Five Ashes, Rotherfield, Wadhurst, Heathfield, Crowborough, and the surrounding High Weald area.

CASE STUDY

  • Hit & Miss Fencing Installation

When a customer approached us about a dead hedge infested with ivy, it was clear action was needed to ensure safety and maintain privacy. Positioned alongside a busy path and road, the unstable hedge posed a risk to the public. Instead of waiting for a new hedge to grow, the customer opted for a more immediate and durable solution, hit or miss fencing.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

  • Very happy with your service and the quality of your work! Thank you Troy and Olly for a hedgecut well done. Highly recommended and we have booked for regular cutting.
