We start every tree planting service in Tunbridge Wells by reading your ground, because it can change twice on the way down a single garden. We plant trees, hedging, and shrubs throughout Royal Tunbridge Wells and the villages around it, including Pembury, Southborough, Rusthall, Langton Green, Bidborough, Speldhurst, and Hawkenbury. A lot of what we do here is replacing large old trees in established gardens, which needs different stock from planting on a bare plot.
Why Your Ground Changes Halfway Down a Slope
We work almost entirely inside the High Weald National Landscape here. The town gives its name to the Tunbridge Wells Sand Formation, the sandstone beneath it, and that rock leaves you with light, sharply draining, acid topsoil.
The catch is what sits underneath. Rain soaks down through the sandstone until it hits the Wadhurst Clay, then has nowhere to go but sideways and back up to the surface. What you get is a spring line: a band of permanently damp ground part way down your slope, with dry sand above it. Your garden may well need two species lists, and planting the same thing across both is how people lose expensive trees. We look for it first thing when we walk a site.
